Monganga Dr. Paul Carlson: in the heart of Congo
In the Fall of 1964, the Cold War was heating up between the east and west. A deadly threat emerged in Congo when Communist trained rebels, called “Simbas”, seized the opportunity to overthrow the fragile new government. The rebellion grew into an international nightmare. At the center of the nightmare was Covenant missionary, Dr. Paul Carlson who was captured and falsely accused by the rebels of being a spy and a mercenary.
Carlson and his family had only been in the Congo just over a year as medical missionaries when the uprising occurred. His skills as a surgeon and love for the Congolese forever endured him to the people. They call him Monganga Paul, which means Doctor.
Forty years have passed but the story of Paul’s life, work, faith, captivity and eventual death deserves to be heard again. It is ultimately a story of hope that will inspire a new generation to make a difference in the world.
